Starting Independent Projects

This post features student writing.

On Sunday morning, after a late wake up at 9 AM, we were treated to a fresh breakfast in the hostel which included fruits, yogurt, and pancakes. From the hostel we headed to Parque del Condor, an avian rescue facility where we saw various rescued birds of prey. Among these birds were owls, hawks, and one beautiful bald eagle named Gringo. All of these unique birds were presented to us along with information regarding their habitat, diet, and other interesting facts. Additionally, some birds demonstrated tricks they had been taught. From the visit at the bird sanctuary, we headed to downtown Otavalo for lunch and to stroll about the local market. After some wonderful ceviche, the group split up as some students were interested in hiking to a nearby waterfall. The others had extended time in the market for looking at local art, shopping, and walking around. Later that day as we regrouped, we headed to a local restaurant where we enjoyed a variety of traditional Ecuadorian cuisine.

Monday was another beautiful day in Iltaqui. The fence around the soccer field has really started to come together as those who were working on it put in lots of effort into painting it. On Tuesday, many students began working on their independent project, which ranged from painting in lines on the basketball court to painting a beautiful mural on the side of the school. Other independent projects that students are yet to do include milking a cow, cooking Guinea Pig, a local delicacy, or teaching locals to speak English. Ultimately, as our time in Iltaqui nearly comes to an end, we are upset to leave our Ecuadorian friends, but are beyond thankful for the bonds and relationships we have built with the people of this beautiful community.

Peace,
